A Billion Dollar Mistake: Very recently, our ‘CRD Leaders’ almost spent a Billion Dollars on an environmentally useless Sewage Treatment Plant. They were stopped by the People and Council of Esquimalt … and others who opposed this useless CRD plan.
Now A New Sewage Treatment Planning Process has started. We citizens must be sure this process is honest, open and democratic. We HAVE to get a good result from it because we are talking about a HUGE amount of money. I think most of us want real environmental benefits, a good price, and minimal disruption.
We need the BEST plan: We should have ALL possibilities on the table, so we can do the smartest things possible. And we should look carefully and closely. But instead we are told ‘major decisions may be made by the end of June’. Once again there is a big ‘rush’ and the public has very little information from the media or the CRD, at least on the EastSide, which includes Victoria, Oak Bay, and Saanich. There is a ‘Public Process’, but most people (95%?) are uninvolved. I AM involved, have attended a couple of meetings, but don’t know much at this point in time. And based on past performance I have little faith in the CRD, although I HOPE I’m wrong.
The process is moving ahead NOW. There were meetings in Saanich and Oak Bay on Saturday May 9. Victoria will have one Wednesday, May 13 from 10 till noon at Crystal Pool. The meetings are VERY poorly advertised, so few people attend.
- WE STILL DON’T HAVE A COST/BENEFIT ANALYSIS OF WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON.
- DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE TECHNOLOGIES BEING CONSIDERED ARE, OR HOW WELL THEY WORK?
- MANY SCIENTISTS SAY OUR CURRENT SYSTEM WORKS FAIRLY WELL. OUR MONEY MIGHT BE BETTER SPENT ON ‘SOURCE CONTROL’.
- MANY OF THE PLAYERS WHO ALMOST WASTED A BILLION DOLLARS ON THE OLD PLAN ARE STILL MAKING IMPORTANT DECISIONS.
We MUST make the best and smartest decisions we can. Mistakes will lead to even more problems down the road. Everyone in Victoria should be keeping an eye on this.
