The Site C Issue: The Tale of Two Voting Systems

By Richard Habgood.

BC’S Site C dam is a very contentious issue. On one side, you have Premier Clark and Energy Minister Bennett, who are determined to build a dam that they say is necessary for future electrical needs and to power an LNG industry. Opponents contend that if BC does need the power, we can get it from less expensive renewable resources and without infringing on First Nations rights or destroying farmland that could feed a million people.

So how does the electoral voting system play into this scenario?

First Past the Post:

The 2013 BC Provincial election, using our first past the post (FPTP ) voting system, saw the Liberals win 44% of the popular vote but in doing so they gained 58% majority of seats in the Legislature. BC’s FPTP voting system awarded the provincial Liberals a “false majority ” government with a minority of votes. And because they gained a slim majority of seats, they have governed as if they have a mandate to do what they want and build Site C. Bell Media and GMO

G M O FOODS: Why would Bell Media say there is NO evidence of danger when there IS evidence of danger?

Aug. 31, 2016:  CFAX Radio in Victoria is owned by Bell Media. On August 29th, one of their hosts said there is Zero Evidence GMO foods are harmful in any way.

That’s fine, except there IS evidence GMOs are harmful.  (see bottom)

The host certainly doesn’t have to believe the evidence GMOs are harmful. He can talk about ‘industry evidence’ saying GMOs are safe. But how can he say there is NO evidence GMOs are harmful – when there IS evidence. Continue reading

Media Lying to Canadians about RCMP Fake Bombing of B.C. Legislature

Media linked bombing to Canada’s Muslim Community – which had NOTHING to do with it.

(July 31, 2016) The RCMP and Federal Government created a fake ‘terror bombing’ in Victoria BC in 2013. Then they and the media linked the attack to Canada’s Muslim Community, which had NOTHING to do with it. The ‘attack’ was planned and carried out by the RCMP. Nothing would have happened without the RCMP. That’s what Judge Catherine Bruce ruled last week. The Harper Government is also implicated.

Since the ‘bombing’, our Government and Media have spread fear, anger, hate, and division in Canada.  Muslim Canadians were the main targets … but ALL of us were the targets of this evil act. Our rulers WANT to divide us and distract us from the real issues we face. And they do it, by ‘creating another enemy’. How many thousands of times were the words ‘Terror, Bombing, and Muslim’ put together in the same sentence by our Media and the RCMP? Continue reading

More Censorship at the CBC

By Ingmar Lee

(early July, 2016)

Dear Almanac,
Just now I was interviewed by Chris Walker (of CBC Almanac) regarding our recent rescue of an entangled Humpback whale in Lama Passage near Bella Bella BC. I am thankful that Almanac was interested in our story, however, I am feeling very frustrated to have been very clearly and deliberately prevented from discussing a serious aspect of the story.

Chris Walker cut me off, stating that he “had to get to the callers,” which is a regretable new Almanac euphemism (since the days of Mark Forsythe – which whom I was able to speak freely with on numerous occasions on Almanac) for allowing several comments from ” the callers,” but with the actual intention of then allowing the currently “acceptable” (to Almanac”) propagandists to expound at length on the issue at hand.

The issue I wished to mention, is that DFO, and its favourite propaganda organization, the Vancouver Aquarium jealously guard their BC-wide monopoly on whale disentanglement services. Unlike virtually everywhere else in the world where locally trained and equipped citizen groups take on the responsibility of rescueing whales, in BC there is only one single ” certified” DFO- employed whale disentanglement “expert,” Paul Cottrell. Currently, even professional DFO agents out on the water are not qualified to do actual whale rescue, but instead, may only deploy one of a very few tracking transmitters into the net trails of entangled whales, after which Mr Cottrell may then fly in several days later from his Vancouver office to attempt the disentanglement. Christy Clark Closes Vancouver Schools To Pay For Corporate Tax Cuts

But Globe and Mail Story doesn’t say that …

(June 29, 2016):  Public Education in BC is under attack as Premier Christy Clark closes schools to pay for Corporate Tax Cuts.  But Canada’s Corporate Owned Media won’t say that because journalists are not allowed to report the truth.  Only the Corporate Truth is allowed in Canada’s media.

A June 21 Globe and Mail story says the Vancouver School Board is looking at closing 12 schools to deal with a $27 million deficit.  The Globe tells us closing these schools would save about $9 million a year  This is about 1 / 1000 of one year’s profit of the Royal Bank ($10 Billion). But the Globe won’t talk about taxing the banks to give more money to our public schools. That’s an idea they do NOT want people to ever think about, so they never mention it.  In Canada saying ‘Tax the Banks’ is not allowed. Continue reading

Are Homelessness and High House Prices Two Parts of the Same Plan?

Would Corporate Canada create a housing shortage to push up prices and make a fortune?
While ‘the corporate media’ remains silent…

(May 27, 2016):    I think the Billionaires who run this country have deliberately created a shortage of homes in many of our cities.  The housing shortage has pushed up prices and put millions of Canadians deeply into debt, while creating huge profits for the 1%.  The shortage has also created a homeless problem that is destabilizing our cities and harming us all.  And this is not by accident, this IS the corporate plan.

There is little available housing in many of our cities. So thousands of people at the bottom of the economic ladder have been forced onto the streets.  These are Canadians who don’t have enough money to compete for a place to live.  In the past we had enough homes for everyone.  But now we don’t.  Why?

Here in Victoria BC, the Media constantly blame the homeless and pit them against ‘the rest of us’.  But the media NEVER tell us why we have this problem. Continue reading

Did RCMP Fake Terror Bombing To Blame Muslims?

On Canada Day 2013, the RCMP ‘faked’ a Terror Bombing in Victoria B.C. The Media then ‘blamed’ Canada’s Muslim Community – who had nothing to do with it.

(May 9, 2016): The RCMP carried out a fake Terror Bombing in Victoria BC on July 1, 2013. Canada’s Media then told us that Muslims had done this terrorist act. Was this ‘operation’ planned and carried out not to ‘prevent’ a bombing, but to fake a bombing and then use that act to blame Muslims and create fear and division in our country?

A phony bombing was carried out by the RCMP. There is no real question about that. And then the Media linked the bombing to Canada’s Muslim Community. Why did Canada’s Corporate Media so happily participate in blaming this ‘terror bombing’ on an entire community of innocent people. The ‘Official Story’ we are being told seemed absurd almost from the beginning. And yet the media repeated it over and over, as if it were ‘really true’. Were journalists told to report the story in a certain way? Continue reading

DESTROYING OUR FUTURE: Christy Clark .. Site C .. and Corporate Canada

No Site C Dam Here

“Creative Commons No Site C Dam Here” by tuchodi is licensed under CC BY 2.0

(March 24, 2016)  The big problem in Canada is that The Corporations run the country.  They own The Big Media, and they control The Top Politicians.  The politicians ‘manage’ us – and the Media keep us divided and uninformed so we don’t get in the way.

Site C is one example.  It’s an economic and environmental disaster – but it works for the 1% of the 1% – so Christy Clark is building it for them.  She’ll spend Billions of our dollars to build Site C and destroy some of Canada’s best farmland.  And Site C will also help bankrupt – and privatize – BC Hydro. It’s Win Win for big business. Continue reading

Interesting Experience Holding a Vigil out side the Legislature.

By Norm Ryder.

Many examples of the government and Worksafe/WCAT abuse and bullying of the most vulnerable – an injured worker almost by definition is in the category of the most vulnerable, One is left with the impression that it is government policy to bully the disadvantaged and the more they are disadvantaged the more they qualify to be bullied.

One certainly can not accuse the government or its agencies of caring and compassion. The government among other gifts to the least vulnerable in their recent budget have decided the richest 2 % should be given 230 million a year or $690 over 3 years in breaks and advantages. Contrast this to the $170 million over 3 years they are providing the least advantaged of the disabled. Continue reading

Canada’s Richest Family Likes Our Current Voting System … Because It Works For Them.

Their Newspaper, The Globe and Mail, likes it too.

(Jan 9, 2016):  The Globe and Mail is owned by  Canada’s richest family, the Thomsons. The Globe began its Jan. 6 editorial with what I’d call a lie … “Over the past decade, 3 Canadian provinces – BC, PEI, and Ontario – have held four referendums on scrapping First Past The Post. Each of these propositions went down to defeat.”

Now, that statement is ‘true’, but it’s not ‘really true’. The truth is that in B.C. in 2005, 57% voted to CHANGE to a Proportional Voting system … 57% voted for PR, BUT OUR RULERS WOULDN’T ALLOW IT.

Why not?  The corporations hate PR because Proportional voting systems are more difficult for them to control.  PR systems give people the governments they voted for. That’s why the Thomson’s don’t want PR.  With our First Past the Post system, the corporations and their media can usually get the governments THEY want.
