KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board Operations Manager, Greg Thompson, says the annual sardine run has reached Coffee Bay in the Eastern Cape. The annual sardine run – dubbed the greatest shoal on earth – is a migration of sardines from the Southern Cape coast northwards to KwaZulu-Natal during favourable conditions in the winter months.
In 2018, the province experienced the best sardine run in years.
Thompson says signs of what is believed to be large sardine shoals have been spotted between the Haven Hotel and Coffee Bay from the air last week.
“Well, so far, it seems like the head of the sardines. If they continue coming further north, is probably still two to three weeks away. You know, we have been wrong before and they can still surprise us. We are due, to quite a big south westerly, next Saturday and there’s a smaller one just before. So, there’s a chance that one or two south westerly (winds) can move them further north.”
