The Site C Issue: The Tale of Two Voting Systems

By Richard Habgood.

BC’S Site C dam is a very contentious issue. On one side, you have Premier Clark and Energy Minister Bennett, who are determined to build a dam that they say is necessary for future electrical needs and to power an LNG industry. Opponents contend that if BC does need the power, we can get it from less expensive renewable resources and without infringing on First Nations rights or destroying farmland that could feed a million people.

So how does the electoral voting system play into this scenario?

First Past the Post:

The 2013 BC Provincial election, using our first past the post (FPTP ) voting system, saw the Liberals win 44% of the popular vote but in doing so they gained 58% majority of seats in the Legislature. BC’s FPTP voting system awarded the provincial Liberals a “false majority ” government with a minority of votes. And because they gained a slim majority of seats, they have governed as if they have a mandate to do what they want and build Site C. TAKEDOWN

By Anne from Saltspring Island.

I am temporarily nesting in a small, simple cabin over the winter months. It overlooks a green, dreamy lake mirrored in magnificence by a thick array of trees standing tall and proud. Each morning, flocks of vocal feathered friends and I greet our connection to all this splendour. This particular morning, however, would be so profoundly different for me, a personal revelation or am I yet another humble conduit for the earth’s urgent message? It began with a glimpse of a delicate, golden leaf spiralling down in its dance to the ground. This very ordinary sight would yield the deeply unsettling reminder that unlike the leaf who in its “aliveness” gives us breath and in its “death” gives enrichment, sadly humanity is only offering up our dance of destruction.

We are the TAKERS. We take the soil, digging, extracting and contaminating. We take the water resources of lakes, streams and rivers and destroy their precious purpose of sustaining all life. We bulldoze paradise and replace it with arteries of highways, sterile big-box stores, half-empty, paved parking lots and vast swaths of suburbia bursting with larger-than-necessary houses filled with our plastic possessions. We take over the oceans of glorious undersea gardens housing majestic creatures of the deep and fill them with toxic dead zones of our waste while endless cargo ships, floating hotels and large fishing fleets leave depletion and destruction in their wake. We take over the skies with invisible highways choked with airplanes, belching smoke stacks, noxious clouds and faded blue. We take over mountains, disturbing their pure and silent majesty with year-round playgrounds for our noisy, self-indulgent amusement. We take away the magic of the changing seasons with our incessant whining of dissatisfaction. Continue reading

BC Legislature Meets on Petronas Give-Away Bill

No Fracking(July 13, 2015): Citizens interrupted Christy Clark as she spoke in the Legislature on Monday introducing a Bill to sell British Columbia out to Petronas. Ms. Clark, with the assistance of the NDP, plans to have this Bill passed within two weeks, before most people realize what’s being done to us and our province.

Your MLAs DON’T want to hear from you on the Petronas deal,
but you CAN tell them what you think …

THE LIBERAL CAUCUS CAN BE REACHED AT: 250 356-6171
THE NDP CAUCUS CAN BE REACHED AT: 250 387-3655
ANDREW WEAVER OF THE GREENS AT: 250 472-8528

Media won’t say F Word: The Corporate Media pretends it’s all about jobs, as if they cared about jobs. They don’t, the media care about Corporate Profits. The media pretend BC will get a lot of money from this, which is NOT true. And the media refuse to say the word Fracking, which is what the Petronas deal is all about. They intend to POISON this province with fracking.

Thank you Christy Clark, John Horgan, our wonderful MLAs, and the corporate media. This is truly one of the greatest betrayals in BC history.

We’ll have to Pay Petronas to stop FRACKING us

Legislature Meets July 13 to Sell Us Out

(July 8, 2015): The British Columbia Legislature begins sitting Monday July 13 to ratify a landmark ‘Agreement’ between BC and corporate giant Petronas.

The Christy Clark agreement locks BC into a decades long tax and royalty plan. The taxes and royalties will be low … so BC will get as little money as possible – and the deal cannot be changed without full compensation to the industry. We are being locked into an economic disaster. Continue reading

Christy Clark’s ‘PETRONAS GIVE-AWAY BILL’ goes to B.C. Legislature July 13

(July 2, 2015) British Columbia’s corporate owned media remained silent on Canada Day as one of the most corrupt and undemocratic Bills in B.C. history moves closer to being passed.

The people we elected to represent us – will meet in Victoria beginning July 13 to pass a Bill to ratify a secret agreement between Petronas and BC premier Christy Clark. (Google: Christy Clark Petronas PDA)

The details of the Clark / Petronas Agreement, signed in May, remain secret, although Ms. Clark says we ‘may’ see it on July 13. Continue reading

Christy Clark’s Secret Deal with Petronas to Be Approved in July

Legislature meets July 13 …

(June 27, 2015): The BC Legislature will meet in July to put into law a secret agreement signed last month by Christy Clark and LNG giant PETRONAS. Premier Clark has so far refused to tell us citizens what is in the Petronas PDA (project development agreement). However, we will be committed to the deal by this legislation – which could be passed in one or two weeks.

According to the Victoria Times Colonist: The deal includes a concession that … ‘no BC government has ever granted’. This is believed to be a GUARANTEE of NO future changes to the tax and royalty structures included in the deal. So Christy is committing us to never changing a deal – which we have not been able to see. The TC also says: ‘It is a measure of how radical this is that special legislation is required to put it in place.’ Continue reading

Why is Christy Clark Poisoning British Columbia?

No Fracking

No Fracking

(June 23, 2015) Christy Clark does not work for the people of BC, and nor does she care about us. Christy works for Corporate Canada, and they will make a lot of money by poisoning us. Christy’s job is to help them.

Corporate Canada wants BC’s oil, gas, water, metals, forests, and etc. And they have no intention of reducing their profits by one penny to protect the environment, or the people who live here. Continue reading
